About Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor brings child abusers to justice by providing a safe place for victims to tell their
story

When a law enforcement officer or child protection worker suspects that a child has been
victimized or witnessed a crime, they need to know that the child is safe.  Prior to Safe Harbor
opening its doors in 1999, a child would have to be interviewed multiple times not only by law
enforcement and child protection workers, but also potentially by medical professionals, a
counselor, and a prosecuting attorney.
Safe Harbor provides a safe and friendly place
for a child to talk about what has happened to
them

Safe Harbor brings together law enforcement,
child protection workers, and the Dane County
District Attorney's Office so that a child can give a
videotaped statement that may be used in court.
If a child discloses evidence of maltreatment or
of a crime, the videotaped statement may be
used in court in place of the child's testimony.  If
the child provides information that a crime did
not occur, the matter can be disposed of
efficiently and fairly.
Safe Harbor coordinates mental health services

The staff of Safe Harbor not only coordinates the videotaped forensic interviews, but also
coordinates mental health services for children and families who have come to Safe Harbor.
Safe Harbor provides community outreach and
training

A nationally recognized curriculum called Darkness
To Light, by Stewards of Children teaches how to
keep the children in your life safe.  Safe Harbor staff
are authorized facilitators of this training, and it is
available to schools, civic groups, churches, and
others who work with children.   Please contact us if
you are interested in hosting a Darkness to Light
child sexual abuse prevention training program.  You
can visit
www.darkness2light.org
to learn more.

Safe Harbor conducts a yearly training for law
enforcement and child protection workers on how to
effectively interview children.  Additionally, Safe
Harbor is working with our partner agencies to
develop protocols that address the issue of child
neglect.
Safe Harbor is not part of a government agency

Safe Harbor is not run by the District Attorney's Office, human services, or law enforcement.  It is
a private non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.  As such, it is funded entirely by private
donations and grants, which enable this vital work to continue.  Children need a safe, friendly,
and child-centered environment to tell their story and Safe Harbor is that place.
